LOOSE WEIGHT WITH CARBS
June 14, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment
Yes it is true! All this time we were told that carbohydrates were responsible for our weight gain. Diets like the Atkins and the Dukan diets allow only meager helpings of this. New research has shown that there is no need to deprive ourselves of the much loved toast and potatoes; in fact they help achieve long term weight loss.
How does this happen? The key is a substance called “Resistant Starch” so called because of its resistance to digest. This is found in foods like bananas, oats and potatdoes. The resistance to digest leaves us feeling fuller for a longer time thereby making us feel less hungry. This means we will be consuming ten percent fewer calories then we would do normally.
Resistant starch is also shown to increase the activity of fat burning enzymes and decrease the activity of fat storing enzymes.
The diet requires a quarter of your plate to be resistant carbs and the rest to be lean proteins, low fat dairy and fresh fruits and vegetables. It also requires you to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, to stay away from fruit juices and fizzy drinks even light ones.
What You Need to Know About Diindolylmethane

With almost two decades of research conducted by scientists at UC Berkeley, it has been found that the compound DIM, commonly found in the Brassica family of vegetables, is one of the most useful and versatile compounds known to science and medicine in recent times.
One of the first benefits of this compound is that it has direct anti-cancer properties that can be useful for fighting all types of cancer. Currently, the National Cancer Institute is investigating the use of this compound in the treatment of different types of cancer.
If that’s not enough, it is also being used as a supplement to the current medication for cancer (Taxol) to see if the effects on patients are better as opposed to prescribing the medication on its own.
In addition to this, Diindolylmethane is also being offered to people who are concerned about their health as a cancer prevention diet in the form of a supplement. According to early research, the ability of these pills to prevent prostate and breast cancer is about 40 to 60 percent, and that can only be considered to be a significant find.
But that’s not all. This compound has been found to work as a natural immune booster, thus strengthening the body from all kinds of viral and bacterial diseases, and in doing so, has been considered to be one of the most versatile compounds to be discovered for the benefit of medicine.
Since the immune system does not distinguish between incurable and common diseases, experts say that this compound can strengthen the immune system to a point where it gets rid of any of these diseases, regardless of how serious it is considered to be in the medical community. All in all, this compound can be considered to be the key to a healthier future for patients and health-buffs alike.
Three Uses of Diindolylmethane

Touted as the most versatile compound in terms of its anti-cancer and immune-enhancing properties, the compound known as Diindolylmethane has been a subject of interest to researchers and scientists the world over.
It was the scientists at US Berkeley who made the discovery of what this compound can do and its immune-enhancing properties are now offered to consumers in the form of a natural immune booster.
But it isn’t just about the prevention of diseases, as this compound is also currently being tested in several clinical trials as a way to cure many viral and bacterial diseases. Here are three ways in which this compound is being used:
#1: Adjuvant Therapy to Taxol
Cells use structures such as microtubules to divide the chromosomes equally, and in doing so, break down themselves. In cancerous patients, the use of Paclitaxel (also known as Taxol) stabilizes these structures thus preventing them from dividing and thus preventing the duplication of these cells. This compound is used for a variety of cancers such as Kaposi’s sarcoma and, according to experts, DIM is now being used as additional therapy in order to lower the resistance that some patients might have towards Taxol.
#2: Cervical Dysplasia
Considered to be the eighth most common type of cancer in American women, cervical cancer begins with the abnormal growth of cervical tissue in the uterus, also known as cervical dysplasia. Since this is a pre-cancerous stage, doctors attribute this disease to the Human Pappilloma Virus (HPV) and are currently testing the effectiveness of DIM in the treatment of this disease.
#3: Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis
Respiratory Papillomatosis is the disorder in which a tumor occurs in the respiratory tract (the trachea and the lungs). Symptoms are a hoarseness of voice which gets worse as the days go by and a difficulty in breathing. Similar to cervical dysplasia, DIM is also being used in the treatment of this disorder.
THE DUKAN DIET
May 11, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment
The dukan diet started to make headlines after rumors that Kate Middleton followed the diet to loose weight before the wedding. So just what is this diet about?
It was created by a French doctor and follows the basic principle of the Atkins diet, which uses a high protein diet to loose weight.
The diet is divided into 4 phases. The first is the “Attack Phase”; lasting up to a week it allows the dieter to eat only lean proteins with minimal amount of oat bran along with a 20 minute walk. The “Cruise Phase” comes next where non starchy vegetables are introduced on alternate days. The “Consolidation phase” introduces minimal amounts whole grains and fruits and allows for a celebration meal. The last “Stabilizing Phase” requires the dieter to eat a protein only meal once a week, while eating a normal diet the other days while requiring you to maintain the daily 20 minute walk.
Health experts criticize it for the depravation of important food groups which eliminate major nutrients leading to problems such as constipation, bad breath, dry mouth and fatigue and if followed over a period of time more serious complications will arise.

If you have been through bariatric surgery, you would be familiar with the term duodenal switch. It is one of the procedures that are conducted these days for patients that are obese. Just being fat can take your confidence away, and if that is not enough, you should have already been warned that your health might be at risk.
Yet another procedure that doctors opt for is the distal bypass which restricts patients to a very strict diet which can lead to further complications if the doctor’s recommendations are not adhered to. And if there are complications, you would have also been informed that another surgery will be in the offing much sooner rather than later.
If you have encountered complications, then the term gastric bypass revisions would have been mentioned, so that the problem can be remedied and the patient can get back on the path to a safe recovery while also losing weight effectively. Of course, it is not over after the surgery, as patients will have to maintain a strict diet and exercise regimen as per the doctor’s recommendations for some time to come.
It is not a comfortable experience all the same – but a necessary one. And in following the guidelines that your doctor sets for you, you can be guaranteed that your life will get healthier in the future.
